I went to Japan for 6 months to work at Three Tides Tattoo in Osaka and it was a great experience to go there. Masa Sakamoto who owns the shop was a great host and I had an awesome time. I got to work alongside some great Japanese artists like Tsukasa and Mutsuo as well as some very talented American artists like Chris Trevino and Adrian Lee. I learned a lot about Japanese tattooing and the culture which is so valuable to my work now.
I was surprised to discover that the clients wanted me to do Japanese style work on them. I was expecting to do mostly Western motifs.
This client was pretty gangster!
Nobody ever got kanji in Japan unless they were tourists or English teachers! Bonji are a very popular motif though… they’re basically Japanese sanskrit.
I had only done maybe 100 koi at this point….I used to do them pretty skinny! Horiyoshi III said it looked very Yoshitoshi style!
This was one of the biggest tattoos I’d done there and it went really quickly…about 3 sittings. I used sumi ink for the entire tattoo and it goes into the skin really smooth. It takes a lot of work to grind the ink every morning but luckily the shop apprentice did it for me!
unfortunately I had a crappy camera at the time and my pictures are very grainy.
This one was an unusual request but it seems more fitting than a snake!
I might have tried to talk her out of this one but my Japanese sucks!
This was my buddy Tsukasa…. goofing around as usual!
check out Three Tides Tattoo and definitely drop in for a tattoo if you’re in Osaka!
